Nobody plans to get married in a downpour.

At least, I hope not.

For my brother’s wedding, we watched the weather and waited as long as we could for a break. Right at the scheduled ceremony time, we got one. So the bride started walking down the aisle. And… then the rain came back.

There wasn’t really time to turn around without completely throwing off the day, so they just got married. For ten minutes, their family stood in the rain while the bride and groom laughed, embraced, and said their vows. Nobody planned those photographs. I’m very glad they didn’t!

The wedding took place on the groom’s father’s property in the Indianapolis area, a place that has been part of his family for generations. It wasn’t chosen because it looked like a wedding venue. It mattered because it was home. Family members helped with the food and decorations, and the guest list was intentionally small and made up mostly of people they loved. That was the point of the day.

Not perfect weather. Not a perfect timeline. Not making everything look effortless for everyone watching. But for each other.

The rain could have become the story of what went wrong. Instead, it became part of their story. That is something I think is worth remembering when you’re planning your own wedding.

Plan your wedding day. But don’t plan it so tightly that there’s no room left for your actual wedding to happen.

Some of the best photographs come from the things that weren’t on the timeline. At the reception, the bride spontaneously greeted every guest as they came through the doors. It wasn’t a scheduled moment or something we had planned for photographs. She simply wanted to see her people. The hugs. The laughter. The look on her face when someone she loved walked through the door. Those photographs work because she wasn’t trying to make a photograph. She was living her wedding.

That’s what I want for my couples, too.

Make a thoughtful plan. Give yourself enough time to breathe. Know what matters to you. Then leave some room for the day to surprise you, because something probably will go differently than you imagined. A groomsman’s belt mysteriously disappears. The timeline might run late. Your carefully planned outdoor ceremony might happen in the rain.

But of course, your photographer will keep an eye out for the fleeting moment without rain and take advantage!

You don’t have to love every unexpected thing. Just don’t let it steal the whole day. Often the photographs you love best are the ones nobody could have planned.

Fathers choking back tears. Best friends cutting it loose on the dance floor. A cheeky glance from your groom.

And sometimes the most unforgettable photos are moments you were hoping to avoid but embraced instead.
